Flint is one of the most familiar features of the South Downs, appearing in fields, paths, churches and old walls. In this episode of Creative Connections, we look at how it formed, why prehistoric people valued it, and how it helped shape the landscape of West Sussex.

What is a hedgerow? Why were they planted? How are they managed? And what plants, wildlife, traditions and folklore can be found within them?

After watching Clarkson’s Farm and hearing Jeremy Clarkson talk about the lack of birds on his farm, we downloaded the Merlin Bird ID app and took it on a walk through the West Sussex countryside.
This episode is not about expert birdwatching. It's about going outside, listening more closely, enjoying nature, and learning the names of a few of the birds around us — whether in the countryside, a garden, a park, or a street with a few trees.

Chanctonbury Ring is one of the most atmospheric landmarks on the Sussex skyline.
