Littlehampton may look like a familiar seaside town, but its shoreline is constantly changing. In this episode of Creative Connections, we explore the West Sussex coast where the River Arun meets the sea — from shingle and sand to dunes, groynes, rock pools, Winkle Island and the exposed chalk near West Beach.
A short journey into coastal movement, hidden geology, and the restless shore beneath our feet.

Welcome to Creative Connections — connecting the creative, creatively connecting everything else. Today we’re looking up, quite literally, at one of Britain’s most remarkable summer visitors: the swift. You may hear them before you properly see them — that high, urgent call above the rooftops, and then a dark crescent flicking through the sky. The thing I want to understand is this: are swifts really birds that spend almost their whole lives in the air?

Welcome to Creative Connections. Today we’re exploring the perfect, yet short-lived, connection between light, weather, trees, and woodland that produces an amazing, carpet of springtime flowers in our ancient woodlands.
Every spring, bluebells appear as if by magic. But they are not appearing on their own. They are part of a brief seasonal relationship between the woodland floor, the trees above them, the returning sun, and the changing spring weather.
And that is what makes them such a good subject for Creative Connections.

Seeing Colours Like Monet

Friday May 08, 2026

Friday May 08, 2026

Welcome to Creative Connections.
Today’s connection begins with Claude Monet standing in front of something very ordinary: a haystack. Then it moves to a cathedral façade. Then to a winter walk under a vivid blue sky. Then to a summer field where the tips of tall grasses seem to blush red against a wash of grey-green.
At first these things might seem completely unrelated. A painting. A walk. A field.
But they’re not unrelated at all.
They’re all part of the same story: how light changes colour, and how the eye and brain turn that changing light into the world we think we see.
